Education and Health: Comparison between the Mediating Effect of Income and That of Personal Control
Kim Jin-Young

Abstract
It is well known that the sense of control is an important mediator linking education to health in the US. The human capital hypothesis that education fosters psychological resources and provides benefits to health is applicable to the US. An alternative is the credentialism hypothesis that education as a symbolic credential rather than human capital increases income and provides benefits to health. The third is the compromise hypothesis that the sense of control and income play a similar level of mediating roles in the relationship between education and health. These hypotheses were examined with data from the Korea Health Inequality Study and the method of structural equation modeling (2,028 adults). In the results, the third hypothesis was supported. In comparison with the finding of US studies, the mediating role of personal control was smaller and that of income was greater in South Korea. These results imply that both the human capital theory and the credentialism theory are applicable to South Korea.
